I highly disagree with the Colorado Springs film critique who reviewed this movie. I thought it was well done and I thoroughly enjoyed it. So there Mr. Epstein put that in your pipe and smoke it! M. Night Shyalaman's original story developed through bedtime stories that he would tell to his children and it evolved into this film. I also enjoyed seeing Mr. Shyalaman play a little larger role in his film. Like Alfred Hitchcock, M. Night likes to place himself strategically in one scene roles. He did a decent job, much better than he does reading out loud (an activity which he's not so good at). His characters remind me of something out of the "The Odyssey" only put into today's time frame . They are bizarre and quirky, but he puts humor into them and makes them fun. This flick has the most humor he's put into any of his works and he uses it effectively. My favorite character is the critic who plays his part completely dead pan. The actor must have enjoyed playing this part as the film critic finally gets his come-uppins.
Paul Giamatti does a wonderful job of anchoring the film with his sensitivity to his character. His humor is subtle and understated. Oh, except for one scene where he asks for a "bedtime story" from one of the tenants who lives in the apartment complex that he undertakes. Very funny.
I have to say that a lot of money was saved on the costumes of the Narf. I wonder how many long sleeved button down ecru shirts she went through during the filming.
Once again Mr. Shyalaman's use of camera angles, tempo, music, lighting and special effects is performed with mastery. I found myself jumping in my seat on more than one occasion, with even a false jump or two (that sneaky little guy). If you are a M. Night Shyalaman movie goer than this is a must see for you. If you don't know who he is yet then this is a must see for you too.
